HSE management

The main purpose of HSE management is to prevent accidents and illness among employees. With a safety coordinator, you can prevent accidents or incidents during special tasks and minimize the risk of injury and illness under normal conditions. HSE is an international term and stands for Health, Safety and Environment.

Get a healthy and safe construction project

Whether you represent the client, consultant or designer, you have important responsibilities and obligations when it comes to safety, environment and work environment.

At MI Support, we have experienced safety managers and coordinators who can handle all stages of the construction project before, during and after handover. The tasks our HSE consultants perform are all listed in the Danish legislation for working environment and requirements, and can vary depending on the size and design of the building.

What does HSE management involve?

HSE management stands for "Health, Safety and Environment" and for us, it is about ensuring health, safety and the environment in the workplace. It encompasses a wide range of activities and policies that aim to protect employees from risks and hazards in the workplace, minimize risks of injury and illness, and protect the environment from potential hazards. Health

Our HSE managers aim to protect workers from potential health issues that may arise during a construction project.

Their work may primarily involve preventing physical injuries or exposure to hazardous chemicals.

In addition, it can involve promoting employee mental health by creating a positive workplace culture and offering resources and support for stress management and other mental health issues.

Safety & Security

Our HSE managers take responsibility for protecting employees from risks of injury or accidents during the construction project. This can include anything from physical hazards such as falls, collisions or explosions to hazards that can occur due to lack of training or insufficient protective equipment.

Their main task is to identify potential hazards and minimize risks by implementing appropriate safety procedures and policies, as well as educating and training employees to identify and manage hazards on site themselves.

Environment

Our HSE managers have a strong focus on minimizing the impact of construction projects on the local and global environment.

Their task also involves identifying and minimizing the work's release of hazardous substances and emissions, as well as minimizing the amount of waste and pollution generated by construction project activities.

MI Support HSE managers also focus on ensuring the project complies with relevant environmental standards and legislation.

HSE in the preparation and design phase

Before the project starts, the safety coordinator prepares HSE guidelines and procedures for the client. During the design phase, a Health and Safety Plan (HSP) is drawn up to ensure that everyone working on site has a good working environment. In addition, the plan serves as a management tool for construction management and contractors.

A PSS contains, among other things:
  • Site organization chart
  • Site drawings
  • Timetables
  • Description of existing conditions and risks resulting from the project design
  • Description of the construction site's traffic and other common areas, including orderliness, tidiness, including snow removal, graveling and waste management
  • Delimitation of areas with special risks and indication of specific measures for e.g. particularly dangerous work
  • Procedures for checking security measures
  • Emergency response and evacuation plans.

HSE in the execution phase

In addition to maintaining compliance with the PSS, the safety coordinator must also make adjustments as construction progresses. It is the responsibility of the safety coordinator to have an overview and be updated with new legislation and standards during the execution of the project.

During project implementation, the safety coordinator takes responsibility for:
  • The mandatory safety meetings
  • Daily rounds
  • The PSS
  • Accident frequency
  • Risk assessment
  • Safety presentation
  • Communicating with authorities (e.g. the Danish Working Environment Authority)
  • Pattern workplace rounds
  • Handling hot work.
MI Support has experience with HSE management during design, construction, mechanical completion, commissioning and qualifications and after handover if extraordinary tasks need to be performed.

HSE, EHS or SHE - what's the difference?

There are several different acronyms used to describe safety management, and it can be difficult to tell the difference between abbreviations such as HSE, EHS and SHE.

The short explanation is that all three abbreviations stand for and generally mean the same thing:
  • H = Health
  • S = Safety (Safety)
  • E = Environment
However, in some contexts, the order of the letters can have an impact on which point is given more importance in the company and in work. For example, EHS management may have a greater focus on the environment, whereas HSE management always has health and safety as the most important items on the agenda.

At MI Support, our safety coordinators can help whatever the needs of your construction project.
- At MI Support, we are working to reduce our own carbon footprint. Our certification in ISO14001, the international standard for environmental management, is an important step for us in a greener direction.
