Meet a MI Supporter

Toke Henvig

Health & Safety Coordinator (B)

Toke Henvig

"If a supplier, for example, has introduced extraordinary safety measures on their own initiative, I feel that my message has got through."

— Toke Henvig, Health & Safety Coordinator (B)

You don't have to shout the loudest to get through.

That is the approach MI Supporter Toke Henvig brings to his role as Health & Safety Coordinator (B) at a large combined heat and power plant. Here he works to ensure a safe working environment and to make safety collaboration work across trades and companies.

With several years on the same site, he has built in-depth knowledge of safety work during the construction process – and, even more importantly, of the people around him.

When the message gets through

When 39-year-old Toke joined MI Support around three years ago, it was as a work permit coordinator. There he ensured that contractors had built the necessary safety measures into their work.

"I have worked with all trades and gained broad insight into many different work processes – from how to install a sewer to how to build a house."

Toke originally trained as an industrial technician and production technologist, but over the years he has continued his education in safety and the working environment.

As his knowledge and experience have grown, so has his area of responsibility, and today he works 100% with safety as a Health & Safety Coordinator on many different projects at the plant. He sees his most important task as making sure everyone can go home from work safe and sound every single day. At the same time, he is motivated when talk about safety is actually turned into action:

"If a supplier, for example, has introduced extraordinary safety measures on their own initiative, I feel that my message has got through," Toke says.

That is one of the things he likes best about his work – feeling that he influences people in the right direction and thereby helps create a good safety culture.

From the first sod to a finished plant

Although Toke has been part of MI Support for several years, his connection to the plant goes back even further. In fact, he has worked there daily for more than eight years and has therefore gained in-depth knowledge of the area and built a large network:

"I know this place really well, and I always know who to talk to, whatever it's about," Toke explains.

The many years on the same site also mean he has been able to follow the construction closely and see how a large project gradually takes shape:

"Being part of the whole process – from when we started digging in the ground to today, when there is an almost finished plant – has taught me a great deal," Toke says. "In addition, technological development has been very positive in the safety field, and we always try to find new safe and gentle methods."

Navigating a central role

One of the skills Toke himself highlights as important in his work is the ability to collaborate with many different people. During a working day, he is in dialogue with project managers as well as contractors out on site.

"It's crucial to be able to talk to everyone, especially because there are often issues that need to be coordinated across different companies and stakeholders," he points out.

That might be in connection with a major lift or alarm testing, where many elements have to work together. "I like being the link that makes it all come together."

The role of Health & Safety Coordinator generally requires Toke to take the initiative for dialogue and help different parties find common solutions. For him, good communication and authority are not about being the loudest, but about meeting people respectfully:

"I place great emphasis on bringing myself into the job by keeping a good tone. No matter how critical the problem is, or who I am facing," he concludes.
